Experiencing Jesus in Opposition

Imagine sitting in a job interview and your prospective boss tells you two things. First, he says the position he wants to hire you for will be challenging and filled with constant opposition. But, second, you will find the assignment incredibly fulfilling–and through it, you'll experience an intimacy with Christ you hadn't prior. Would you take it? As you consider this role, which part of the man's conversation will you reflect on most? As Christ-followers, we're faced with this question daily. Which will we give greatest emphasis–the opposition we'll inevitably face, or the God who stands with us, refines and strengthens us, and makes Himself known to us through it all? In this episode, host Jennifer Slattery speaks with Bible study writer Kathy Howard on the beauty that can come through opposition.

How Scripture Helps Quiet Fear

Our world provides numerous reasons for us to feel uncertain and afraid. But Scripture tells us we have an even greater reason to live courageously. We have an all-powerful, loving, faithful God who watches over us, wants the best for us, and has the power to bring that best to pass. In this episode, host Jennifer Slattery talks with Bible teacher Mary DeMuth about a unique approach to Scripture that has greatly helped her experience decreased fear and increased peace.

Brother Shows Support For His Sister Fighting Cancer In Sweetest Way

Get ready for the tissues. A brother shows support for his sister fighting cancer in the sweetest way.

A beautiful teen girl is given a horrible diagnosis of cancer. Her long and gorgeous brown locks are being cut and shaved off in preparation for chemotherapy. To show support as her tears fall from her eyes and she grabs a tissue, she turns to her kind-hearted brother standing right next to her and gives him a smile as his head is shaved for support.

The brave young woman shared that she went to the ER in March, and they discovered a cancerous mass. She tells how her lymphoma is very hostile and quick, so it needs treatment fast. The girl's name is Tita Hall, and she tells how her family has been by her side during every step of the process. She shares with a smile as Tita tells how her brother Levi was with her when she was getting her head shaved, and she thought he was kidding around about getting his head shaved. To her surprise, he sat down and shaved his head, too. She was so proud and encouraged by his actions.

The brother Levi says that he wanted to be there for her and he jokes that he was also in bad need of a haircut. Tita has finished 3/6 rounds of chemo now. She tells boldly, “I didn’t take this as why is God punishing me. I took it as what can I do to help others in this situation.” She chose to share her story virtually to encourage others.

Her mother then tells about how she has always been positive since she was born. She reveals that when they found out about the cancer, her brave daughter turned to her and told her mother that she was going to be ok. She said, “That’s her character.” This girl has modeled such faith and security that God loves her and has a plan in the midst of her pain. It is truly inspiring. Please pray for her.

“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” James 1:2-4

Scriptural Truths to Quiet Fear

The words recorded in Scripture are much more than wise principles upon which to build one's life. And while, reflecting deeply upon them helps to transform our thinking and rewire our brains toward increased peace, these timeless truths do more than that. They contain supernatural power to fight back darkness and fortify our souls. In this episode, Bible teacher and host of the Unshakable Hope podcast Kelly Hall and Jennifer Slattery talk about Scripture they turn to when they feel afraid.

Fighting Anxiety and Fear Through Praise

When battling anxiety, fear, and depression, countless people have turned to the Psalms for comfort. In them, we read raw and honest emotion, soul-deep prayers, and about a God who sees, cares, and has the power to lead us to greater freedom. While fighting cancer, guest Becky Harling learned to use praise, often guided by what she read in the psalms, to fight her fear and increase her peace. In this episode, she shared her experiences and the Bible study God prompted her to write: The Extraordinary Power of Praise: A 6-Week Study of the Psalms for the Anxious Heart.

Listen to hear how He did this in King David's life, and in host Carol McCracken's as well.

Mother with Cancer Brings Daughter to Tears with Heartfelt Answer

A mother dying of cancer brought her daughter to tears with her heartfelt, loving and thoughtful answer to a question.

Time is the most precious commodity that any of us possess. It’s something that we must use wisely because we will never be able to recover in one minute or second. Time is limited and finite, never to be recovered again.

Time constantly moves and does not and will not stop for anyone, no matter how much we’d like it to do so. The valuable nature of time is most evident whenever a loved one is diagnosed with a horrible, life-threatening disease or condition. We want to spend as much time as possible with them because we don’t know when it will be the last.

A clip posted on social media captured an interaction between a mother and a daughter. The mother, the text in the video indicates, has Stage 4 cancer. Both know that time is running out, and they are making the most of every remaining moment. The daughter asks her mother questions “before it’s too late.”

The daughter asks her mom, “What’s one thing you always want to remember after you’re gone?”

The mother’s loving, thoughtful and caring response to the inquiry instantly brings tears to her daughter’s eyes.

“How much I love you,” the mother says to her daughter.

Mom goes on to reassure her daughter that after she does eventually pass away, she will always remain with her and will love her.

“And even though you can’t see me, I’m in your heart,” Mom said. “And if you ever question anything, just stand still for a minute and listen and it’ll come to you. We’re together in our hearts. They can never take that away.”

What a beautiful but, at the same time, sad, heartbreaking and gut-wrenching moment.

Exodus 20:12 “Give honor to your father and to your mother, so that your life may be long in the land which the Lord your God is giving you.”

Hulk Hogan On Faith, His Baptism And His 'Lord And Savior' Jesus Christ

Hulk Hogan discussed his faith, baptism, and his “Lord and Savior” Jesus Christ, during a fascinating conversation with CBN Sports, providing a deeper look at the wrestler who’s recognized worldwide.

Born Terry Gene Bollea on August 11, 1953, and known as Hulk Hogan by fans everywhere, the 70-year-old looks to be in great physical shape. As he shares during this deeply personal interview, it appears his soul and spiritual health are in pretty good shape as well!

Hulk Hogan lives in Clearwater Beach, Florida, where he owns a store and restaurant named Hogan’s Hangout. However, just a few miles away in Largo at Indian Rocks Baptist Church is where Hulk says he experienced the greatest moment of his life—being baptized (by Pastor Aaron Filippone) and publicly proclaiming his faith.

During the nearly 12-minute interview, Hulk talks about his upbringing, career and brand, friendships in the wrestling world, and perspective on faith. He says that he accepted Christ when he was 14 years old but became “derailed” along the way. Today, Terry is committed to proving that he is faithful and not making the same mistakes this time around.

When asked how he manages work and home, Hulk says that he is “just Terry” when he’s at home. There are no wrestling belts or photos in his home. He doesn’t wear his signature headband at home. However, he understands that when he leaves home, fans expect to meet Hulk Hogan. He says it is not just a job, and he’s very grateful for the Hulk Hogan character, which is often goofy by design, but he’s learned how to separate his work and personal life.

Hulk talks about his favorite career moment. It occurred after he wrestled against Iron Sheik in Madison Square Garden in January 1984. At the time, Iran was holding American hostages, and Hulk Hogan represented an all-American character. After the fight, his father told him how proud he was, and he admitted that Terry was right in making the choice he did; he had chosen to leave college and pursue wrestling, to the disappointment of his father.

Andre the Giant, who played Fezzik in The Princess Bride, was a good friend to Hulk. Hulk says that Andre was 7’4” tall, weighed 650 pounds, and had a rough life. He shares that what he most appreciated about Andre was his honesty, guidance, and enduring friendship. Andre the Giant died in 1993 when he was just 46 years old.

Hulk asks the host if he can share a story about another wrestler, and he goes on to talk about his relationship with Roddy Piper (a.k.a. Rowdy Roddy Piper). He and Roddy had not been friends in the ring; they disliked one another. However, in later years, they were friendly, and Hulk spoke to Roddy about faith. Roddy was asking questions and searching, but he’d never spoken about being a Christian or being saved. So, Hulk was tremendously moved when he heard a voice-mail message from Roddy that came in two days after his death. Rowdy Roddy said, “I’m just loving you my brother. I’m just walking with Jesus.”

The interviewer and Hulk Hogan touch on the interesting correlation between life and the ring. They discuss the difference between being a spectator or a wrestler in the ring. Are we Christians really living our faith, or are we in the stands? They also note that when wrestlers go “off script” in the ring, they mess with the already determined outcome of the match. We, as God’s followers, need to quit trying to write our own scripts and trust in the plan that God has for us.

It looks like Terry Bollea is all in and not done making moves. He’s got more to share with the world, and we are here for it!
