I remember in 1999 falling into a state of depression that lasted for about 12 years. I had been working in my chosen profession for about 4 years. The job I had been working at was one in which if you were given a hundred tasks but got one wrong the supervisor would come and speak with you about it. Normally if you took a test and got 99% that would be considered good. But at this place of work that wasn't enough. Finally, after about 4 years it was more than I could bear at the time. I found myself depressed and could not understand why.

With some processing I was able to understand that some issues throughout my life had played a part in this final blow. My dad began to cheat on my mom when I was about three years old. Although I had nothing to do with this I felt rejected. When playing baseball in the schoolyard I was always one of the last picked on a team. During my high school days when trying out four different sports I was either cut from the team or if chosen never really seen any playing time. When I started my career and it seemed to demand such perfection this was a straw that broke the camel's back.

I can really relate with individuals in a similar situation. I'm sure you have heard of people that are you so depressed they don't even shower. I was never at that point but sometimes the simplest tasks could take an entire day.

Finally, about 7 years later I found a book on a discount rack at Walmart. It was a very small book about 3 in by 5 in and around a hundred pages. It was called Healing for Damaged Emotions by David Seamands https://amzn.to/3aFJRuz. David Seamand is a Christian minister with great revelation On how the human soul becomes wounded and how the human soul can be whole again. In 2007 while reading this book, I came across the scripture in 1 John 3:1, See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! It was the beginning of my understanding of who I was in Christ Jesus. And that was the beginning of my healing from depression. It did not happen overnight. In fact, it did take another 5 to 6 years. But the healing did come. I would recommend this book to anybody suffering from any type of emotional distress. I remember before I was a Christian, I was somewhere I should not have been, doing things I should not have been doing. When someone tried to rob me. They asked me for all my money. And I had no money on me. But I was wearing a gold cross that was given to me. The individual that gave it to me said, “the chain is so strong that if somebody tries to steal it, thet chain will never break. But, fortunately the chain did break that day. The robber snatched it and ran.

I said I was a Christian. But, actually I had no clue what that meant. I was a seeker. I was seeking for God. Within seconds of the cross being pulled from my neck, I heard a voice. It was not audible. Yet, it said, “you have tried everything to be happy, why don't you see what the Christians have to live for. That was the start of my journey to understand Christianity.

You will hear 3 voices in your life. You will hear your own voice; you will here Satan's voice; and you will hear the voice of God. John 10:27 says, My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. That's why you must study the Bible, the Word of God. Because the Word is God (John 1:1). By studying the Word, you will know God's voice when you hear it because God's voice sounds like His Word. And this is the help you will need in order to know His voice.

Growing up my dad had a good job. But, unfortunately he would spend his paycheck on what he wanted and not what we needed. This meant that we spent a lot of time in our home without utilities. And we would have went without food if it wasn't for my mom's parents. If I can remember correctly my grandparents bought our groceries for about a 10-year period. From the age I was 5 years old, all the way until I was 15 years old.

When I look back over my life, no matter how bad it was, I can remember the good times. I remember the times my grandfather would give me 5 dollars for a good report card and then my grandmother would give me another 5 dollars for the same report card. She would say, “don’t say anything to your grandfather about this.

I would spend every Saturday with my grandparents growing up. And my grandfather would take our family out to lunch every time.

My grandparents always made sure that myself and my siblings always had a gift for our birthdays and Christmas.

Towards the end of her life my grandmother won woman of the year for all the great things she had done in her life. Like giving blood more frequently than allowed during World War II.

Despite all the things my grandparents did during their lifetimes, I never heard them speak about a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. But the Bible says in John 3:16, For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life (World English Bible). God standard is perfection but we are not perfect. So, He sent his son as a sacrifice for our sins.

God's Looking for You

I remember at about age 10 years old going to my grandfather's house On my father's side Of the family. My grandfather would be watching the 700 Club. The host Pat Robertson would be talking about topics I did not understand. And then he would tell you to lay your hands on the TV screen that he wants to pray with you. My grandfather would say do you watch this guy? Do you watch the 700 Club. I remember thinking I'm just a kid; why would I want to watch this.

But the Bible reads in Jeremiah 1:5, “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. Before you were born, I sanctified you. I have appointed you a prophet to the nations (World English Bible).”

And 2 Peter 3:9 reads, The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some count slowness; but he is patient with us, not wishing that anyone should perish, but that all should come to repentance (World English Bible).

God was using my grandfather to reveal Himself to me. And he's been looking for relationship with you before you were born. You may be thinking like me; Who is this crazy guy telling me about God. God sent me to tell you; He's looking for you.

Let's begin today's teaching with our foundational text for the series. Proverbs 6:2 says, you are trapped by the words of your mouth: you are ensnared by the words of your mouth.

1) Say what You Want; Don’t Say what You Have.

Mark 11:23 reads, For most certainly I tell you, whoever may tell this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and doesn’t doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is happening; he shall have whatever he says (World English Bible).

2) Speaking God’s Word will Produce Creative Power in Your Life.

3) Speaking God's Word will Produce what You Say in Your Life.

4) Speaking God’s Word will Produce Victory in Your Life.

So, speak God’s Word. Because You can Have what You Say!
